THE QUEEN

Th ere are two types of queens: those who hold their title by marriage to a king, and those who wear the crown in their own right. In other words, queens who reign because they are the sovereign, not merely the king’s consort. At the beginning of the 12th century, Urraca I of León was the first queen to rule as a king in her own right in Europe, an idea encapsulated by Art Historian Therese Martin in her book, Queen as King: Urraca of León. Her first mayor biography The Kingdom of Leon-Castilla Under Queen Urraca: 1109-1126 was written by American professor from Villanova University, Bernard F. Reilly (1925-2022), this site wants to honor the memory of Dr. Reilly, who’s work, who is quoted for any specialist in early XII Century Spain has no yet being translated to Spanish.
